AI consultants in Sweden: what they do, what they cost and when you don't need one
SEK 950–4,500 an hour, pilots of four to eight weeks, and 35 percent of Swedish companies already using AI. An honest guide to what an AI consultant does, what it costs and when you can do without one.
What does an AI consultant do?
An AI consultant helps a company choose, build and introduce an AI solution for one bounded problem, then hands it over. That can be an assistant that answers questions from your own data, a report that produces itself, or a ranking that shows sales who to call.
Most of the work is data. An AI solution is never better than the data underneath it, so a good AI consultant starts with which decision should get better and which data is missing, not with which model is newest.
| Delivery | Example that has run in production |
|---|---|
| An assistant that answers from your own data | Web analytics you ask in Telegram instead of logging in to a dashboard |
| Reporting that runs itself | Monthly numbers from ~600 accounts in one pipeline instead of by hand |
| A ranking that supports a decision | Which companies actually watched an ad, so sales can choose who to call |
| Outside data, collected every day | The shelf a brand can't see from its own systems, measured daily |
All four were built by Niklas Andersson, who leads Promtech.
AI consultant, AI agency or AI developer: what's the difference?
The difference is how you buy the skills. You hire an AI consultant for an assignment, an AI agency is a firm with several consultants, and an AI developer or AI engineer is usually an employee.
| Role | What they do | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| AI consultant | Chooses, builds and introduces a solution for a bounded problem | You have a concrete problem and want it solved and handed over |
| AI agency | Several consultants: often strategy, training and implementation | You need several skills at once or a larger programme |
| AI developer or AI engineer | Builds AI features in code, usually as an employee | AI is part of your product and the work never ends |
| Data engineer | Builds the flows that fetch, join and test the data | Decisions rest on data that is late, scattered or wrong |
| Forward deployed engineer | Works inside the client and builds in their environment until it works | The problem can only be solved from inside the business |
Search for "AI engineer" in Sweden and you mostly find salaries and courses. It is above all a job title, not something you buy.
What does an AI consultant cost?
An AI consultant costs SEK 950–4,500 an hour in Sweden in 2026, excluding VAT. Senior freelancers and niche AI agencies usually charge SEK 1,500–2,500 an hour, and the large consultancies SEK 2,500–4,500.
There are no official statistics on consulting rates. The figures below come from two Swedish firms that publish their price ranges, Swivrr and Satori, retrieved on 29 October 2026. They differ slightly, so we show both.
| Type of consultant | Hourly rate excl. VAT | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Junior freelancer, 0–3 years | SEK 950–1,200 | Swivrr |
| Mid-level via a smaller AI agency, 3–6 years | SEK 1,300–1,600 | Swivrr |
| Senior freelancers and niche AI agencies | SEK 1,500–2,500 | Satori |
| Senior via an established consultancy, 6+ years | SEK 1,700–2,200 | Swivrr |
| Larger consultancies | SEK 1,800–2,800 | Satori |
| Large firms such as Accenture and Deloitte | SEK 2,500–4,500 | Satori |
Per assignment, according to Swivrr:
| Assignment | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| Pilot, 4–8 weeks | SEK 80,000–200,000 |
| Mid-sized implementation, 3–6 months | SEK 400,000–900,000 |
| Running and further development | 15–25 percent of the build cost per year |
Stockholm runs 20–35 percent above Gothenburg, Malmö and Linköping, also according to Swivrr.
What does Promtech cost?
Promtech's hourly rate is SEK 2,200 excluding VAT. That is in the upper part of the range for senior consultants, and it is a deliberate choice:
- Fifteen years of the same job: getting data to the people who decide, including the numbers a London trading desk decided on every day for eight years.
- The whole chain in one person: the data, the AI and the delivery to where the decision is made. No hand-offs between junior and senior, and no consultancy adding its margin on top.
- You own what we build: the code, the tests and the documentation. No subscription afterwards.
- We measure before and after, in hours or kronor, and say no if the problem isn't worth solving.
The first week goes into understanding the decision and what it costs today. After that we know enough to say what the rest will cost. For a first number right now, work through one repetitive task in the calculator.
Hire an AI engineer or bring in an AI consultant?
Hire when AI and data are the core of your product and the work never ends. Bring in a consultant when you have a bounded decision or system that needs to be built, made to work and handed over.
A software and systems developer in Sweden earns SEK 55,500 a month on average, according to Statistics Sweden (produced in 2024). With employer contributions of 31.42 percent that comes to roughly SEK 875,000 a year, before pension, recruitment and equipment. Senior AI specialists in Stockholm are often paid more, but there are no official statistics for that role.
The same SEK 875,000 buys just under 400 consulting hours at SEK 2,200.
| Question | Hire | Consultant |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | About SEK 875,000 a year in salary and employer contributions, plus pension and recruitment | Paid per hour or phase, and stops when the assignment is done |
| Time to start | Recruitment often takes several months | Often within a few weeks |
| Skills | One person with one profile | The skills the problem needs, when it needs them |
| Afterwards | The person stays and keeps building | You own the solution and run it yourselves |
| Fits | When AI is part of the product | When a decision or a process should get better |
How long does it take to implement AI in a company?
A first working delivery usually takes four to eight weeks. With us it is split into three phases over about four weeks, and the work moves from our hands to yours step by step:
| Phase | When | What happens | Who does the work |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Ask first | Week 1 | We pick one bounded decision, sit with the people who make it and agree what better means | Promtech 80%, your team 20% |
| 2. Dig it out, deliver it | Weeks 2–4 | The data is pulled out, joined, tested and delivered as a working system in your environment | Promtech 55%, your team 45% |
| 3. Hand it over | From week 4 | You take over the code, tests and docs, and we measure the result | Promtech 12%, your team 88% |
Larger implementations take three to six months, but they usually work best as a series of bounded deliveries like this, one at a time.
Do we need an AI strategy first?
No, not to get started. What stops most companies isn't the lack of a strategy, but the lack of skills and of a concrete problem to solve.
According to Statistics Sweden, 35 percent of Swedish companies with ten or more employees used AI in 2025, just over ten percentage points more than the year before. Among companies that considered AI but held back, lack of relevant skills was the most common reason.
| Company size | Share using AI in 2025 |
|---|---|
| 10–49 employees | 30.8% |
| 50–249 employees | 49.6% |
| 250 employees or more | 71.9% |
| All companies with 10+ employees | 35% |

Start with one decision that comes back every week or month. Ask what you did last time, which data was missing and what that cost. That is the method we describe in Right call on wrong data is still the wrong call.
Which data is needed?
The data the decision needs, and it usually exists already. It comes from three places:
- Your own systems: ad platforms, CRM, finance system and spreadsheets, where the numbers exist but can't be reached.
- The world outside: retailer shelves, prices and public sources, collected every day.
- Both, joined: where the most useful answers usually are, like which companies watched your ad next to your own sales outreach.
Two rules apply whatever the source: every number carries the date of its data, and estimates are shown as ranges. Read more about the three sources.
How do you know an AI consultant is good?
A good AI consultant asks about your decision and what it costs today before talking about technology. Seven things to check:
- They can show systems running in production, not just demos.
- You own the code, the tests and the documentation when the assignment ends.
- Every number has a date, and estimates are shown as ranges.
- There are tests that stop bad data before anyone sees it.
- The assignment has an end date and a handover.
- The result is measured before and after, in hours or kronor.
- They say no when something isn't worth building.
What is a forward deployed engineer?
A forward deployed engineer is an engineer who works inside the client, in the client's systems, and builds until the solution works in production. The role comes from Palantir and is spreading fast, in Sweden too: both OpenAI and Wonderful are hiring forward deployed engineers here.
There is no established Swedish title. The closest is an AI consultant who stays until it works, and that is how we work: in your team, in your tools, one decision at a time.
